The doors will open this morning in the Chester Upland School District.
For that, students, parents and administrators can thank teachers and staff. They are reporting for the first day of school despite the fact that they will not be paid. The financially ailing school district does not have the money to make its payroll, thanks in part to the ongoing state budget standoff.
The problems surrounding Chester Upland have been well documented. It did not happen overnight. It is not going to be resolved that way either.
Instead, today I cede the floor to someone who knows much better than I the challenges that are part and parcel of Chester Upland.
Maria Weatherly is a math teacher at Chester High School. She also is a resident of Chester.
For the first day of school, she offered a guest column that appears on today's op-ed page.
I could not have said it better.
The citizens of Chester Upland owe Maria - and all of her colleagues - a thank you. The schools would not be open today without them.
