A problem that continues to 'dog' Delco

It's an issue that has - pardon the expression - "dogged" Delaware County now for years.

Ever since the Delaware County SPCA decided to get out of the animal control business, the county has been trying to figure out how to handle the strays that roam the county's streets.

Building their own shelter on a site in Darby Township proved too expensive.

Eventually, the county partnered with the Chester County SPCA to handle strays. But that solution has not been without it issues as well.

Now, a group is coming forward to take issue with the idea of sending our stray animals to Chester County. They held a rally outside the Media Courthouse yesterday to put pressure on Delaware County Council to cut ties with the Chester County SPCA and build a shelter here in the county.

Not surprisingly, this comes a week before Delaware County voters will go to the polls to fill three seats on Delaware County Council. Richard Womack, a Democrat from Darby Township who is seeking one of those seats, voiced his support for a shelter here in Delaware County.

What he did not mention was how to pay for it.

That's a problem, one Delaware County officials are quite familiar with.

No doubt this issue will continue to "dog" the county until someone comes up with a way to pay to build and operate a new shelter here in the county.
