Delco's Odd Couple in the war on gun violence

Call them the Odd Couple.

It's not every day you see a Delaware County Republican standing beside a Democrat, whether it be in Media or Harrisburg.

Actually, today's pairing will take place in Norristown, where two new Delco state legislators, Rep. Jamie Santora, R-163, and Leanne Krueger-Braneky, D-161, will join a group backing legislation that would close a loophole that allows some people buying rifles to avoid a background check.

Actually, almost every member of the Delaware County delegation is backing the House Bill 1010, which would require background checks for people purchasing short-barreled and long guns from dealers or privately through individuals, including at gun shows.

Santora is likely to take some heat for this stand from gun rights groups, but he made it clear when he was running to succeed Nick Micozzie that he was in favor of sensible gun legislation.

This certainly falls into that category.

"I truly believe it's the first bill that doesn't take Second Amendment rights away," Santora said.

Both Santora and Krueger-Braneky have signed on as co-sponsors on the legislation introduced by Rep. Steve Santarsiero, D-31, of Bucks County.

And both will be standing side by side at today's press conference in Norristown.

We'll bring you all the details.
