A new wrinkle in the state budget battle

Don't pop the corks on that state budget deal just yet.

There's a new wrinkle in the process.

I know, you're stunned. Remember, this is Harrisburg we're talking about here.

The new twist is one more push behind legislation that would eliminate property taxes and replace it with a combination of increases in both the state sales and income taxes.

We've been reporting this week how Sen. Tom McGarrigle, $-26, of Springfield, who was an early backer of the plan, has now pulled his support.

We take note of the new dilemma on today's editorial page.

So what's the big deal with the budget? It's all in the numbers.

The "broad framework" of a budget deal announced last week by Gov. Tom Wolf and Republican leaders in the Legislature banks on an increase in the state sales tax. But it does not touch the income tax, which would put it directly at odds with the Senate and House Bill 76, the so-called Property Tax Independence Act.

A vote on the push to kill off the hated property tax is set next week.

Don't look for a state budget before then, despite Wolf saying he hoped to possibly sign something next week, before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Hey, it's Pennsylvania, we should be thankful these guys are still at work. Isn't it time for them to take another vacation?
