Granite Run Mall gets date with wrecking ball

Here's a date to put on your calendar.

Jan. 9. Mark it down, Delco.

We'll ring in the new year by ringing out the old, and knocking down another county icon.

Granite Run Mall, the sprawling shopping center along Baltimore Pike out in Middletown that for years was a mecca for shoppers, has a date with the wrecking ball.

New mall owner Michael Markman, of BET Investments, which purchased the mall for $24 million, announced his plans this week after getting final approval from Middletown Council.

Markman has plans for a 'town-center' style of development, a mix of retail, residential and restaurants. The two remaining mall anchor stores, Sears and Boscov's, will remain, as will a freestanding Kohl's at the site.

Two large high-rise apartment buildings will sprout, one facing Route 352 at the site of the old ChiChi'srestaurant, and the other on Oriole Avenue.

The new development will be called the Promenade at Granite Run.

Farewell, Granite Run.
