Kudos to the champion Sun Valley Vanguards Marching Band

This newspaper expends a tremendous amount of space and manpower to regale our readers with the accomplishments of student athletes.

They don't call us "Delaware County's Sports Authority" for nothing.

But athletes are not the only ones competing on those fields.

Unfortunately, for a lot of reasons, we don't always give similar coverage to kids engaged in other - no less important - endeavors. Take the marching bands, for instance.

They likely involve just as many kids as the football team, if not more. But they do not routinely get splashed all over either the front or back page of the newspaper.

In fact, they likely are lucky to get any mention at all.

Part of the reason for that is timing. Most of the big band competitions - called cavalcades - occur on the weekends, when our small staff is stretched even thinner.

But I did not want to let what happened this weekend pass without mentioning it, and making sure these kids got their due.

Serious kudos today to the Sun Valley Vanguards Marching Band.

They took the title this past weekend in the Cavalcade of Bands Championships with their show "Witch & Famous." Sun Valley was the 1st Place gold medal winner out of 12 competing schools in the American Open Division. The Vanguards Marching Band has placed 1st at every competition this season for a total of seven 1st Place wins! The Marching Vanguards are under the Direction of Tim Pry, who has been Sun Valley's music director for the last 10 years. Sun Valley's Marching Band has now placed in the top 3 for the last 4 years at the Cavalcade of Bands Championships.

Kudos to the Vanguards! We're planning a feature story to appear in the paper this week.
