A stand against straw gun purchases

We used our editorial page today to discuss gun control.

Don't shoot the messenger!

Actually, this is a proposal almost everyone can get behind.

It's about a law that was passed to beef up the penalties for anyone who engages in what is called a 'straw purchase' of a gun. That is the practice where a person who is legally eligible to purchase a gun does so, then turns it over to someone who cannot pass the background check, often people with criminal records.

A woman in Chester recently became the first person in the state to be sentenced that the new law, which was named for Brad Fox, the Montgomery County police officer gunned down in the line of duty by a man who got his hands on his gun through just such a straw purchase.

She appealed the mandatory minimum sentence as required under the new statute.

The State Superior Court rejected her appeal.
