An epidemic of crime against seniors

We've written any number of stories on the heroin epidemic that is ravaging not just Delaware County, but much of the region and nation.

Not getting as much ink is what seems like another epidemic.

I'm talking about people preying on the elderly, ripping them off. There is another story in the paper today.

A woman hired to be the companion of a 90-year-old resident in the Plush Mills Senior Living facility in Wallingford now faces charges that she got possession of the woman's bank cards and ripped her off to the tune of $10,000.

It's just the latest in a string of these incidents.

You can read about them here.

That's one of the reasons District Attorney Jack Whelan set up a special Senior Exploitation Unit in the County Criminal Investigation Division.

They seem to be doing a booming business.

Especially at this time of year, it seems especially heartless to prey on the elderly.

Sometimes these cases are linked to gambling or drug addiction; other times it's just plain greed.

Whelan summed it up best: "Our seniors deserve to enjoy their retirement and hard-earned money without the fear of being victimized."
