Chip Kelly has an unhappy running back

Chip Kelly is facing an interesting dilemma this week.

You would think that all would be ebullient after the Eagles' improbably upset win over the vaunted Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the Patriots last Sunday.

Well, not everyone.

Apparently, DeMarco Murray is less than thrilled. The running back signed for huge bucks as a free agent after shattering records last year for the Dallas Cowboys is not happy with the way he is being used. Or maybe better said not being used.

Murray clearly was given a secondary role in the Eagles offense on Sunday, as Kelly instead featured Darren Sproles and even Kenjon Barner.

A lot of people - me included - have come to the conclusion that Murray's style of straight-ahead running simply does not fit Kelly's much ballyhooed "system."

Since Chip has no intention of changing the system, only occasionally deigning to put his QB under center and have his tailback in the I as Murray seems to favor. So it was encouraging to see him at least change his stripes on Sunday, even if it meant downplaying the guy who is making all that money.

After the game, it is believed that Murray made his displeasure with the way he is being used to Eagles owner Jeff Lurie.

Now we will see if Kelly sticks to his guns as Shady McCoy and the Bills come to the Linc on Sunday.

For his part, Kelly simply said the smaller, quicker backs made a better matchup against the Patriots. He was careful not to say anything about Murray's status, insisting the team has four good backs. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur echoed the same comments. But only one person is making the big bucks. That is Murray. And he's apparently not happy.

The situation could get even dicier this week with the return of Ryan Mathews from concussion issues. When he's healthy, Mathews has been the Eagles best back this year.

Stay tuned.

Maybe the return of Shady will not be the only drama unfolding at the Linc this Sunday.
