A sad, familiar lament with another Catholic school closing

We used our editorial page today to talk about something we've talked about all too often in Delaware County.

Another Catholic school closing.

This time it's St. Francis de Sales in the Lenni section of Aston. It's the latest in a long line of closings and consolidations that have rocked so many parishes and school communities across Delaware County.

It's hard to fault the archdiocese in most of these instances. The numbers don't lie. In the case of St. Francis, they actually got a reprieve several years ago when a Blue Ribbon Panel assembled by the archdiocese recommended it be shuttered.

Back then the parish rallied and saved their school.

This time there is no such silver lining. Enrollment continues to decline. Costs go up.

In June, the doors will close at St. Francis de Sales. They will not reopen in September.
