Missing Nancy Reagan, and the elegance of another time

It was the first thing I thought of yesterday when word started to break that former First Lady Nancy Reagan had died at age 94. My God, how we've changed.

Nancy Reagan epitomized style and grace as she stood by her husband's side. She was Ronald Reagan's biggest booster, defending him and his legacy, while altering the role of the first lady. She was an iron will behind that elegant front.

Contrast that with what we've seen the past few weeks as Republican candidates have trashed each other in their bid for the White House.

Yes, you heard correctly. Last week we had presidential candidates remarking on hand size and what that may or may not correlate to in terms of other parts of the male anatomy.

You can't make this stuff up.

You can only shake your head and wonder what a woman like Nancy Reagan must have thought.

Make no mistake, I was not Mrs. Reagan's biggest fan. At one point I actually thought Ronald Reagan became president because she wanted to be First Lady.

Today I can only look back at the Reagans, their life and love story, and shake my head at what now stands for political discourse in this country.
