Phils 'starting' to look like decent club

Raise your hand if you have been pleasantly surprised by the Phillies?

Thought so.

This started in spring training, and after a disappointing 0-4 start, Pete Mackanin's troops seem to be turning things around.

One thing is markedly different about this team than last year's crew.

Pitching.

The Phils have gotten a solid start in nearly every game. That includes two scintillating starts by Jeremy Hellickson and Aaron Nola to kick off the new season, only to see both great efforts go to waste amid bullpen implosions on consecutive days vs. the Reds.

But since then the relief corps seems to have hit its stride, and the Phils might just have a new closer in Jeanmar Gomez, who again did not give up a run in recording his third straight save.

Charlie Morton gave Mackanin six solid innings, something that has been a trait of the Phils' starters. Morton got help last night from Hector Neris, David Hernandez and Gomez to shut out the Padres.

The 3-0 victory gave the Phils their third win in the last four games.
