How 'bout that Sam Bradford!
Yes, I was the guy who tweeted and blogged last week that Carson Wentz might wind out being more of a Carson 'Wince' playing behind this offensive line.
But even I was surprised to learn Saturday that Wentz had suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs that likely will end his preseason with the Birds.
So, yes, I will continue to be the leader of the Sam Bradford Fan Club.
I still think he's going to have a big year. But after one preseason game, I have to admit I'm a little worried about the Eagles' ability to protect whoever happens to be lined up behind center.
And that was before we learned that No. 2 overall pick and wunderkind Wentz had suffered an injury suffered during his extended performance against the Bucs.
Don't wait for me to question new head coach Doug Pederson for having Wentz in there that long behind a very inexperienced line. If, as the team proclaims, Wentz is not going to play in the regular season, he might as well get as much time in these exhibition games as possible.
Then again it might be good for someone to remind Wentz he's no longer at North Dakota State. He's now in the NFL, and his penchant for trying to run over people, while admirable, does not bode well for his health.
As for my guy Bradford, his was strictly a cameo appearance vs. the Bucs.
He was in for three snaps, and completed one pass.
Last summer Bradford was still trying to recapture his form after recovering from still another knee injury.
He then quickly gave way to backup Chase Daniel, who was battered behind the Birds' patchwork offensive line.
Jason Peters was out, and now it's pretty apparent that even Lane Johnson concedes he's going to be suspended for using a banned substance, despite his argument that he ran it past the app that's used by the NFLPA and it was supposed to be OK.
Protecting the QB is now going to be a priority for Doug Pederson.
And once he gets a feel for that situation, this team is going to have to come to grips that they still don't have a wideout who can consistently get open.
Yep, it must be football season.
