We used out editorial page today to again wonder why exactly Richard Dunlap is leaving the Upper Darby School District.
The Upper Darby School Board this week signed off on a "retirement" package for the outgoing super.
But no one is saying why Dunlap is leaving.
Maybe Dunlap is truly simply retiring after a long, distinguished career in education.
Then again, maybe it has something to do with the plan he was pushing to rebalance some district schools, specifically when it comes to class size and diversity. That plan, and the way Dunlap went about trying to put it in place, clearly had rubbed some people in the district the wrong way.
I'm trying to be careful in not making any accusations here. Not everyone in the district has done the same.
That's why I think the board owes the public a fuller explanation of what happened.
For now, the board is passing it off as a "personnel" matter. They're not talking.
Neither is Dunlap, no doubt to protect his exit package.
Maybe we'll never know what really happened between Dunlap and the board.
I think taxpayers - the people who pay the bills - deserve better.
