Wentz vs. the Browns: There's some history there already

There are all kinds of story lines with the Eagles Sunday as the Birds kick off the 2016 season.

All eyes will be on Carson Wentz as he becomes the first rookie QB to start the season as the No. 1 QB in Eagles' team history. That's right, no one - including Donovan McNabb - has ever done it.

No one knows that better than Doug Pederson. He was the stand-in starter back in 1999 when the Birds drafted McNabb and groomed him to be the starter. That lasted about a quarter of the season before McNabb took over.

But there is another angle to this Sunday's game that interests me.

The opponent.

That would be the Cleveland Browns.

Yes, the same Cleveland Browns who apparently passed on the opportunity to select Carson Wentz with that No. 2 pick and instead traded it to Howie Roseman and the Eagles for a boatload of draft picks.

Instead the Browns signed disgruntled - and often injured - Redskins QB Robert Griffin III to be their starter.

The Browns probably could not envision the events of the last week, which saw Roseman trade his expected starter, Sam Bradford, to the Vikings. Doug Pederson followed suit by announcing that Carson Wentz would in fact be the team's starter in the opener.

They've also made it pretty clear this week they do not consider Wentz a Top 20 quarterback - at least not yet.

Think Wentz would like to show the Browns how wrong they were to pass him over?

We're about to find out.
