Doing the hard work in Aston

On today's editorial page, we take note of an important civics lesson that is playing out in Aston.

It's similar to important issues that pop up from time to time across the Delaware County landscape.

It's becoming almost something of a sport here in Delco to take potshots at public officials when it comes to unpopular projects. It's another altogether to roll up your sleeves and actually get to work to effect substantive change.

Two years ago, when the Delaware County Intermediate Unit first rolled out their plan to expand the tech school campus in the township, it became pretty clear that it was going to be a controversial - and very unpopular - plan.

Residents mobilized to oppose the plan, which would have consolidated the operations of several IU campuses at the Aston site, based on traffic and safety concerns. The number of students at the site would have doubled.

This week - neaerly two years later - the IU was back with a new plan. They heard the complaints, and they changed their plans.

It's the way the system is supposed to work.
