Your chances of hitting a deer are going up

You can file this one under the category, "Tell Me Something I Don't Know."

It seems my early morning commute is getting a bit dicier.

If you are like me and are in the office long before the sun comes up, this probably won't come as much of a surprise.

Yes, that glint you see off in the distance is popping up more often.

We're up to our necks in deer.

Not only that, but our chances of slamming into one while driving are going up.

That's according to the folks at State Farm Insurance, who apparently tracks these kinds of dangers on the road.

In its annual deer claim study, the company indicated drivers in Pennsylvania now have a one in 67 chance of hitting a deer.

That's up 5.8 percent from last year, when the odds were one in 70.

Those numbers give us the No. 3 ranking in the country when it comes to motor vehicle collisions with deer. We trail only West Virginia and Montana.

They don't have to convince me.

I've become something of an expert in taking evasive action when it comes to deer. My first and most important rule is this: When you see that glint - the shine off a deer's eyes - out in the distance, SLOW DOWN. There are several reasons for this. But the most important is that I can assure you that deer is not alone. If one deer dashes across the road in front of you, I can assure you there are three or four coming up right behind him. Don't simply exhale and continue to whiz by, you're likely to encounter one of the trailers.

By the way, if you think you're seeing more deer on the road these days, that's because you are.

State Farm also notes this is deer mating season, and the likelihood of you hitting a deer more than doubles in October, November and December.
