The DACA debate

The DACA debate came to the Springfield office of U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan Wednesday.

The Republican made it clear after President Trump rescinded the program that protects those who were brought into the country illegally by their parents when they were kids that he now believes it's up to Congress to fix the situation.

If there was any doubt, he was reminded of that by dozens who paraded outside his office in opposition to the move by the president.

DACA - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals - offers protection to some 800,000 young people, many of them students and professionals who have never known any other country. It gives them the right to go to school, or work. Almost all of them have jobs and pay taxes.

Among those 800,000 are nearly 6,000 right here in Pennsylvania.

On our editorial page, we take a look at the issue, and wonder why it suddenly became such a hot-button item now, with one region of the nation still trying to recover from Hurricane Harvey, while another braces for Hurricane Irma, and everyone keeping an eye on North Korea.

Don't look for Congress to settle this thing. Have they been able to agree on anything else?
