Congress needs to help kids

While the nation has been focused on the Republican tax reform plan, another crisis has been flying under the radar.

It should not be.

Congress has yet to authorize funding for CHIP. That stands for Children's Health Insurance Program. It covers kids in low-income families who earn too much to qualify for traditional Medicaid programs.

The program covers almost 8,000 kids here in Delaware County, about 100,000 across Pennsylvania, and millions across the nation.

All of those programs are in danger of running out of money because Congress has yet to authorize funding for the plan.

U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello, R-6, of Chester County, is pushing a measure to at least get the funding secured until a permanent fix can be put in place.

Congress needs to OK the plan - and then quickly address a permanent solution.
