Does the GOP still need President Trump?

It’s crunch time for Republicans.

They have their coveted tax cut plan.

It was passed by the Senate in the wee hours Saturday morning. They will now sit down with the House and hammer out a compromise version of the massive tax reform plan.

Now they have to live with it. And defend it. And campaign on it.

Here’s one man’s theory.

Republicans needed to deliver this one victory. They increasingly were hearing from disenchanted donors upset that the Republican Senate, Republican House and Republican presidents were getting nothing done despite holding all the cards to power.

They failed on Obamacare.

They had to deliver on tax reform.

And to do it. They needed the power of President Trump and the frenzy he can whip up in the party’s base to get everyone on board.

It worked.

What Democrats and others have complained is little more than a massive giveaway to corporations and the nation’s richest folks is about to become reality.

But Republicans now may not have that much need for President Trump. They got what they wanted. Tax reform.

It will be interesting to see how moderates like Rep. Pat Meehan, R-7, handle the hot potato of the president. Meehan will face a tough race in 2018. He may want to start putting some distance between himself and the president, along with all the Tweets, the Mueller probe, and the increasingly tenuous position of the president.

And he may not be alone.

Watch to see how many Republicans bail on the president.
