William Penn loses a champion

This newspaper has long reported on the struggles of the William Penn School District, in particular the way Pennsylvania's system of funding education has for years penalized families there for no reason other than their zip code.

No one has fought longer and harder to rectify that situation than longtime William Penn School Board Member Charlotte Hummel.

That's why we're sad to report that the kids of William Penn have lost one of their biggest champions.

After 16 years serving on the school board, Hummel is stepping down.

She was honored at this week's school board reorganization meeting, along with another outgoing board member, Rafi Cave, who has served since 2013.

Hummel first joined William Penn back in 2001.

She will be greatly missed.
