Honoring an officer: RIP, Sgt. Cunningham

Yes, we are still expecting a lot of snow today. Trust us, the TV people breathlessly tell us, it's coming.

And there was another rally against the Mariner East 2 Pipeline before a Senate hearing out in Harrisburg. This time protesters took the novel approach of serving Gov. Tom Wolf with a 'summons' demanding he come to the region to meet face to face with residents opposed to the project.

But neither of those stories dominates our front page today.

I took one glace at the photo that accompanied a plea making the rounds for the family of a Newtown Township officer and I knew instantly what the big story in Delaware County was going to be today.

Too often when we look at police, we only see the badge. Some of those times it's not under the best of circumstances.

What we don't see is the life behind that badge, men and women dealing with the same kinds of problems t

he rest of us do. The photo on today's front page is of Newtown Sgt. Clinton Cunningham, along with his wife and kids. Cunningham died suddenly over the weekend. It was not in the line of duty. Cunningham was not at work at the time.

He was doing something lots of us do. He was working out when he suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage.

It's hard to describe just how sad this story is.

I think Rose Quinn captures it pretty well.

Our goal today was not to exploit the death of an officer, but to perhaps offer some comfort to his friends and family, help the fund that is growing to help his family, and honor his public service.

Rest well, Officer Cunningham.
