A big win for Delco's Dems? Yes, but no slight to GOP

Before I'm inundated with outrage comments from Delco's Republican faithful, let me assure you that the headline on today's editorial is not a reference to the local GOP.

Today's editorial references the crucial 5th District Democratic race for U.S. Congress. It calls the result a 'huge win for Scanlon, Delco Dems.'

This is not in any way a slight to Republicans.

I am fully aware that Mary Gay Scanlon simply won the nomination, not the election. That comes in November.

But it was still a big win for Delco Dems.

Here's why: The new 5th District as constructed by the state Supreme Court after it tossed out the old congressional districts as being a blatant example of an unconstitutional gerrymander placed all of Delco under one roof. But the district also included a sliver of Montgomery County and, more importantly, a chunk of South and Southwest Philadelphia.

With a horde of 10 candidates on the ballot, the fear among some Delco Dems was that the Delco vote could be splintered, opening the door to Rich Lazer, the South Philly candidate and former member of Mayor Jim Kenney's Cabinet who also had the backing of John Dougherty's powerful Electricians unions.

That didn't happen.
