Just another chunk of the 24-hour news cycle

There's nothing quite like getting out of bed, flipping on your trust portable radio, and having KYW tell you about a train derailment in Crum Lynne.

Well, there goes Thursday.

That's kind of the way it goes these days. We take this 24-hour news cycle pretty seriously.

I don't recommend it as a lifestyle.

But it could be worse.

After being in the office a couple of hours, I got a call from a reader in Ridley Park.

He had a complaint, but thankfully it was not about the newspaper.

His beef? He had been putting up with helicopters circling above his house in the area of the derailment for four hours. He questioned the need. Seems like a pretty legitimate point. There were no injuries. It wasn't a haz-mat situation. But train traffic - both on SEPTA's Wilmington line and Amtrak's Northeast corridor in the area - was suspended.

I understand why the TV stations use helicopters. It's not something newspapers do. Yet.

You can get the details here.
