The nightmare of the parquet floor

It's that damn floor.

Sixers fans last night were visited by the Ghost of NBA Past - and it all took place on that damn parquet floor.

It was the signature of the old Boston Garden. And it's been transported to their new home.

I'm sure the Sixers would have rather they burned the damn thing.

After being idle for a week while the Celtics and Bucks battled through a Game 7 in their opening NBA playoff series, the Sixers showed some serious rust in losing to those green shirts with the shamrock - on that parquet floor.

It immediately calls up visions of Cousy, Russell, Havlicek, Bird, McHale, all the Bean Town stalwarts who stuck daggers into the Sixers in so many playoff series.

The only thing missing was Red Auerbach's victory cigar.

Our man Jack McCaffery is in Boston, and he has all the details.
