A salute to a true Delco hero - Emlen Tunnell

We have spent the last few days talking about the NFL.

And the National Anthem.

And about what all that entails.

Whether or not they accept the mantle, athletes are role models. Kids look up to them.

If kids - or anyone else - is disenchanted with today's athletes, we suggest they look back at a native son of Delaware County who is not nearly as well known as he should be.

Emlen Tunnell, who grew up in the Garrett Hill section of Radnor Township, was a star athlete at Radnor High. He went on to a great college career and starred in the NFL. He was the first African American player to suit up for the New York Giants. And he was the first black player to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

He interrupted his college career to join the U.S. Coast Guard, and twice saved the lives of shipmates.

He is a true Delaware County hero.

Last weekend they celebrated the life of Emlen Tunnel by unveiling a statue of him by the Sports Legends of Delaware County. The 7-foot statue stands outside the Radnor Township Municipal Building, home to the museum.

It is an appropriate honor.

It is a shame that Tunnell is not more widely known, his accomplishments not more widely celebrated.

Let's hope that's about to change. Starting with today's editorial page.
