The Year of the (Swarthmore) Woman in Delco politics

The Year of the Woman continues to resound through Delaware County politics.

In particular, the Swarthmore women.

Longtime borough committeewoman Colleen Guiney was tapped Sunday by Delco Democrats to be the new leader of the party. She succeeds longtime Chairman David Landau.

The rise of Guiney came about in part as a result of a challenge to Landau from labor leader John Kane.

Both men eventually decided instead to nominate Guiney for the post.

Guiney was elected by acclamation.

It's the latest in an impressive run for Swarthmore Democrats.

It comes just weeks after attorney and former Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board president Mary Gay Scanlon turned back nine other contenders for the Democratic nomination in the newly minted 5th Congressional District seat. She will face Republican Pearl Kim in November.

Meanwhile, state Rep. Leanne Krueger-Braneky, D-161 of Swarthmore, continues to be one of the most impressive new voices in Harrisburg. She will be facing her first re-election test in November, a rematch against Republican Patti Rodgers Morrisette. All of this comes as Democrats continue to flex their muscles in the county. Flush with a growing edge in voter registration, Democrats won both seats on County Council up for grabs in last November's election, as well as sweeping all three county row offices.

"Together we are changing the face of Delaware County," Guiney said in accepting the post.
