Battle of Don Guanella heats up again tonight

The Battle of Don Guanella is likely to heat up again tonight in Marple Township.

The development that has sparked intense community opposition is back on the agenda for commissioners.

You might remember that the original development plan, a massive project known as Cardinal Crossing, was rejected.

A new plan being pushed by the Carlino Development Group features a scaled-down plan that also would save much of the site as open space and community athletic fields.

But opponents remain steadfast, pointing out the plan is still bigger than many existing shopping centers, such as the nearby Springfield Mall. They warn of massive traffic problems and damaged property values, in addition to the loss of one of the largest - and last - pristine open tracts in the center of the county.

But an interesting thing has popped up. I have now heard from several people in the community who are in favor of this smaller plan. They like the idea that it preserves a lot of the open space. Not surprisingly, many are affiliated with youth groups, which would benefit from the fields that would be created at the site.

The commissioners meet tonight at 7.

We'll be there to tell you what happens.
