Manny happy returns?
Uh, not for Phillies fans.
Most media reports this morning have stud Orioles shortstop Manny Machado being traded to the Dodgers. The deal is expected to be announced today.
Hey, at least we got to see our sole All-Star, ace pitcher Aaron Nola, throw a scoreless inning, including fanning Millville's own Mike Trout.
Things aren't sounding all that good for the Sixers either. First they lost out on the LeBron sweepstakes. Now reports are indicating the Spurs are dealing Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors.
Could things get any worse.
Well, actually yes.
Anyone else remember what happened on this day in 1983? The Phillies were in first place, albeit floundering at 43-42. So GM Paul Owens decided to shake things up by firing manager Pat Corrales.
Yes, Corrales was fired with his team in first place.
Maybe Owens knew something. That team, which featured the remnants of the Reds' Big Red Machine, including Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez, caught fire in September and won the National League pennant before losing to the Orioles in the World Series.
The Orioles? Yep, the same team that is breaking hearts all over Philly today by trading Machado to the Dodgers.
