Picking up the pieces at Our Lady of Angels

First there was disbelief.

Then came the tears.

Now comes the hard part.

They are starting to pick up the pieces at Our Lady of Angels Regional Catholic School, which was devastated by a massive fire last week.

One entire wing of the school is gone. Luckily, a fire wall and the determined effort of dozens of first responders kept the flames from spreading to the new section of the school, which includes offices and the gymnasium.

The archdiocese already has announced that school for the 400 students who attend Our Lady of Angels will start on time in space at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield.

Sunday they held a special Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish to contemplate what happened and offer thanks that despite the devastating loss, there were no injuries reported.

Our Lady of Angels was formed in 2012 when the archdiocese merged the parish schools of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Our Lady of Fatima.

There is a GoFundMe account that has been started to help with the effort to get the school back on its feet.

Among the crucial needs are school supplies and even instruments for the school band.
