The property tax dilemma

The American Dream of home ownership is turning into a nightmare in many Delaware County towns.

The problem - no shock here - is property taxes.

In Upper Darby, where residents are staring at another 2.5 percent increase in their property tax tabs, residents are now literally trapped in their homes. They can't sell because the homes aren't selling for what they paid for them just a few years ago - in part because of their whopping property tax tabs. There are some folks in Drexel Hill where school taxes are now approaching $12,000 a year.

In nearby William Penn, the situation is just as acute, forcing school administrators to make some very tough decisions.

Fixing the problem of property taxes has been talked about forever in Pennsylvania.

We're talking about it again on today's editorial page.

America was built by women and men who were educated in one room school houses that taught them to read, write, and do basic arithmetic. Parents were the primary educators and were required to get their children to and from school.
Schools are now bloated with before and after school programs, children being transported to and from the schools by expensive bus systems, all at the expense of the taxpayer and some of the children cannot read, write, or do arithmetic at third grade levels. Get rid of the bloat, make the parents responsible for their children , and bring back the 3 core education programs that built America
