A great Philadelphian, & a great Chester citizen

A couple of important things to note today - on both our editorial and op ed pages.

In our editorial, I take time to salute one of the really pre-eminent Philadelphians. That would be H.G. 'Gerry' Lenfest.

Calling Lenfest a philanthropist does not do him justice.

Lenfest made a billion dollars in the early days of the cable TV industry - then gave it all away.

His imprint revitalized our cultural, educational and even media landscapes.

That's right. Lenfest holds a special place for the ink-stained wretches who still toil in the newspaper industry. He believed in a free press, and more importantly he invested in it. He is responsible for the rescue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com. Eventually he set up the non-profit that now runs the company.

But Lenfest also had a big effect on the suburbs. His Suburban Cable dominated the western suburbs in the early days of cable TV.

And one of the most spectacular vistas in all of Chester County, the ChesLen Preserve, bears his name.

You can read our salute to perhaps the greatest Philadelphian here.

Speaking of great ones, on op-ed today we carry a salute to one of Chester's finest. That would be the Rev. Bernice Warren, the inspiration behind Chester Eastside Inc.

Rev. Warren passed away recently, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the city she loved.

Read about it here.
