It's a lesson you learn early on in journalism. Either that or you move on.
You don't go into this racket to make friends.
That's one of the reasons I don't join any groups such as the Rotary or the Lions.
I speak to these groups all the time. One of the things I always stress to them is that there is a likelihood that at some point it's entirely possible that the newspaper will be contacting them in less than ideal circumstances.
I learned just how uncomfortable that can be on one of the very first big stories I covered 40 years ago.
It was the summer of '78.
Yeah, I know. I can't believe it's been that long either.
