Delco memories of John McCain

The woman who pens our Delco Top 10 blog, Mary Ann Fiebert, came up with a gem yesterday.

She went into her archives and dug out the old photos of then Republican nominee for president, Sen. John McCain, during a campaign rally at the Media Courthouse.

You can see Mary Ann's work here.

There were a lot of memories floating around since the 'Maverick' senator from Arizona lost his battle with brain cancer over the weekend.

My friend Jim Vankoski, from the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, sent me this prized possession.

It turns out McCain had several connections to Delaware County.

His idol and favorite ballplayer when he was a kid was none other than the pride of Marcus Hook, Mickey Vernon.

McCain responded to a gesture from Eleanor Nealy of Trainer, who sent the senator an autographed copy of Vernon's book. He also noted that he would be happy to send a letter to the Hall of Fame on Vernon's behalf.

Then there is this note that was shared in the newsroom yesterday afternoon.

Did you know that McCain's first wife, Carol Shepp McCain, grew up in Lansdowne and they were married in Saint Philomena's church?

Small world.

On today's editorial page, we offer a salute for a maverick, POW, statesman, congressman, senator and presidential candidate. John McCain was an American hero.
