One day after Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro went on national TV to announce that he believed the Vatican had knowledge and covered up the pattern of abuse detailed in the horrific findings of a statewide grand jury, Catholics continue to try to come to grips with the shocking details.
Now the National Review Board, a panel set up in the wake of the original priest abuse scandal in Boston in 2002, has weighed in with a fairly stunning statement.
The board flatly believes that the church hierarchy cannot resolve this problem. In fact, they go so far as to say they are part of the problem.
The board is now calling for the laity and parishioners - not church leaders or bishops - to investigate the problem and seek solutions to resolve the issue of priest abuse once and for all.
We talk about it on today's editorial page.
