The new normal for today's teachers

It's the 'new normal.'

Right there along with shopping for school supplies and setting up their classrooms, teachers now are taking proactive steps to protect both themselves and their young charges.

This comes in the wake of the latest mass school shooting that took place earlier this year in Parkland, Fla. Those gunshots that snuffed out 17 lives reverberated across the nation.

Teachers here in Delco last week took part in a seminar that included self-defense tactics, such as delivering a blow to the throat, kneeing someone in the groin, and the "mongoose principle," that would be flailing around like a wild mongoose.

It sounds kind of weird.

It's actually dead serious.

No, teacher did not sign up for this kind of thing when they took up their profession. But times have changed.

This is the world we live in today. And these are the steps teachers need to take.

It's the new normal.

We talk about it on our editorial page.
