Happy Birthday to the Daily Times!

Happy Birthday!

To Us!

It's the Daily Times birthday. We're turning 142 today.

No, there's truth to the rumor that I was the editor then, too.

On this date in 1876, this newspaper started publishing as the Chester Daily Times. The first edition rolled out of a building at Welsh Street and Edgmont Avenue in Chester.

Eventually the paper became known as the Chester Times.

If I had a quarter for every conversation I've had with a longtime reader who has informed me they have been reading the paper 'since it was the Chester Times,' I'd be a rich man.

In 1931, the paper moved to 18 E. Eighth Street in the city.

On Nov. 2, 1959, the paper tweaked its name again, becoming the Delaware County Daily Times.

In the late '70s, the newspaper moved from its longtime home in Chester to the Primos section of Upper Darby.

We spent decades there, before moving to our current home in Swarthmore two years ago.

Don't tell anyone, but this actually isn't Swarthmore. Geographically, this is Springfield Township. Yes, I know it's not connected to any other part of the township. It's a bit of an tiny island down here on South Chester Road.

Only this island doesn't come complete with tiki bars and cool drinks with umbrellas in them.

But we're still covering Delaware County.

Bring on year 143!
