Other Times: RIP, Mickey Vernon

One of the best things that appears in the paper every day is an item we call "Other Times."

It appears on Page Two every day, along with our Focus on Delco feature photo.

In Other Times, our expert freelance Colin Ainsworth combs through our microfilm collection and mines several nuggets from the past each day, noting events that took place 100, 75, 50, 25 and 10 years ago.

In particular the older items, things that occurred a century ago, are fascinating.

But it also reminds us of things that we have lost.

Yesterday, Other Times offered a memory sure to strike home with Delco sports fans.

We already were mourning the loss of Eagles great Tommy McDonald.

Other Times told us that it had been 10 years since we lost Delco icon Mickey Vernon, the two-time American League batting champ and the pride of Marcus Hook, 10 years ago.

Vernon was 90 years old.

Jim Vankoski, a close friend of Mickey's and former president of the Delco League and current mover and shaker behind the Sports Legends Museum of Delaware County, had this to say about Vernon.

"He was this county's role model, an example of how someone should act. If you wanted to know how to do something, all you had to do was ask yourself was how Mickey would have done it."

The effort goes on to get Vernon elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

No one deserves it more.
