Remembering a very special place & 2 special Delco connections to it

I used my print column today to remember a visit to a very special place.

The interesting thing is that I sort of ran across it by accident.

If you have not been there, put it on your list.

The Flight 92 Memorial outside Shanksville, Pa., is without question one of the most haunting places I have ever visited.

If you go, try to pick a clear day.

When you stand there, the sky just seems to swallow you up, as you realize what happened on that fateful day, and the fact that everyone in that area who looked up in the sky that day no doubt knew exactly what was happening.

Adding to the importance of the memorial is something I did not discover until later.

There is a very important Delco connection to the memorial.

Actually, two of them.

For starters, one of those 40 heroes who made the decision to fight back and try to take the plane back from the hijackers, causing them to fly it into the ground instead of their intended target in Washington, D.C., was from Delaware County.

Deborah Jacobs Welsh was a flight attendant on Flight 93. There are plaques that line the fence where you stand and gaze out at the crash site. Debbie's is one of the first you see.

The other connection happens to be the fact that the man in charge of the park, in fact all the national parks in western Pennsylvania, is a Delaware County native.

Last Monday, Stephen Clark led President Trump and other dignitaries into the site for a special ceremony.

You can read about it here.
