Using video to crack down on crime

You could call it Delco's version of 'Candid Camera.'

But the joke in this one could be on criminal suspects as the county moves to increase the use of video surveillance. And they are asking for the public's help.

On our editorial page today, we talk about the new program rolled out by District Attorney Katayoun Copeland this week, in which law enforcement is asking residents and businesses to register their video cameras with the county. That way if a crime occurs in the vicinity, police will know where the closest video cameras are.

As we see more and more each day, video is increasingly a key to solving crimes.

Take a look at the image attached today. This video captured a suspect in a Chester homicide calmly getting out of a car, walking across the street and opening fire on a man sitting outside his house. The man was killed. The suspect is now under arrest.

Thinking about committing a crime in Delco? Think again.

More importantly, think about how much of our daily lives is now captured on video.

The D.A. has a message for criminals:

Smile, you're on DAdelcam!
