The Phils free fall continues

Not even Aaron Nola could bail out the Phading Phils.

The ace right-hander got roughed up in the first inning, and only lasted until the fifth as the Phils got swept by the Nationals. The Cy Young candidate got touched for four earned runs on 6 hits, including a couple of homers.

The loss drops the Phillies 7 1/2 games behind the first-place Braves in the National League East.

Anyone remember back in early August when the Phils were 15 games over .500 and cruising along in first place?

Me neither.

They are now 11-23 since Aug. 5. They are 2-9 in September and are 0-10-1 in their past 11 series. That's right, they have not won a series in September, nor most of August.

They now sit at 74-71, just three games over .500.

In truth no one expected them to make the playoffs this year.

Then again, no one expected this collapse after they were 15 games over .500 either.

Simply put, this team gets too many of the basics wrong.

They don't hit, they don't catch, they don't run the bases especially well either.

Any questions?
