A bipartisan push to help abuse victims, with Delco pols taking the lead

We come today to praise our local legislators, not to bury them.

You're stunned, I know.

The Senate this week signed off on a very important package of bills aimed at protecting victims of domestic abuse.

The measures would get guns out of the hands of those convicted of domestic abuse, and make it much easier for victims to get an extension on a protection from abuse order.

And it has the fingerprints of two Delco senators all over it.

Sen. Tom Killion, R-9 of Middletown, championed the push to make those convicted of abuse surrender their firearms in 24 hours, as opposed to the current 60 days. Also they would have to be turned over to law enforcement or a licensed firearms dealer.

Sen. Tom McGarrigle, R-26 of Springfield, pushed the measure to make getting that PFA extension easier.

And this was a bipartisan process.

Just a few weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats from the Delco delegation stood together on the steps of the Media Courthouse urging Senate action after the measure passed the House. On hand were Reps. Leanne Krueger-Braneky, D-161 of Nether Providence, Margo Davidson, D-164 of Upper Darby, and Jamie Santora, R-163 of Upper Darby.

You can read about their efforts on today's editorial page.
