At NFL midway point, Eagles stand at 4-4

Here are a few things to ponder as the Eagles fly back across the Atlantic.

At the halfway point of the season, the defending Super Bowl champions sit at 4-4.

They managed to hold on for a 24-18 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London.

I could get used to that 9:30 a.m. start. You can watch the game and still have the bulk of the day to do something. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in front of the TV all afternoon on a gorgeous fall day. Of course, we did not exactly miss out on that yesterday. It was for the most part cloudy and damp, although it was at least a little warmer.

Ever stop to think where this team would be without Carson Wentz? Yeah, I know they won the Super Bowl without him last year.

But I'm telling you he is everything with this team.

Injuries continue to mount for the Birds, as they lost crucial right offensive tackle Lane Johnson, who could miss a month, and also cornerback Jalen Mills.

The bye week could not come at a better time for the Eagles, who are banged up. They do not play again until Nov. 11.

The win in London may have saved the Birds' season, at least for now. A loss would have dropped them to 3-5. Instead they fly home even at 4-4, still trailing the 5-2 Redskins, who beat the hapless New York Giants yesterday. But the Eagles still have two games left vs. the 'Skins.

One thing I was wondering yesterday is how the game affected Sunday church attendance. Wonder how many Eagles fans skipped Mass to stay home and watch the game.

And finally there is this. Yes, we're still somewhat in the glow of last February's Super Bowl championship. And today just happens to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Phillies last World Series championship.

Philadelphia sports teams have captured exactly 13 championships in its history, the latest being that memorable Super Bowl victory on Feb. 4.

Last night the Red Sox won the World Series. It was New England's 10th championship since 2001.

Ouch!
