Saluting a compassionate community

If there is one thing we could all use a little more of every day it would certainly be this:

Compassion.

We live in what at times can seem like an ugly, mean world.

It's world where personal interaction is becoming devalued. Where anonymous online personas rule, and where an unknown avatar can mock you for the smallest imperfection or mistake.

And that is to say nothing of the great, real struggles so many of us face every day.

Rachel McGonigle knows a little bit about those kinds of difficulties.

She's lived it - and she's been the recipient of her neighbors' compassion.

Now she's paying it back.

McGonigle was overwhelmed as she deal with devastating medical diagnoses for two of her children.

But she was lifted up on the compassionate shoulders of friends and community.

She did not forget.

Instead, she decided to pay it back.

McGonigle started a group called Compassion United Haverford.

Each month they pick out a needy individual who is facing some short-term setbacks and come to their aid.

This weekend she will serve as the grand marshal of the Havertown Township Day. The theme this year for the day is Compassionate Community.

They certainly made the right choice for grand marshal.

We salute Rachel McGonigle and her endeavors on our editorial page.
