If nothing else, it is one of the great nicknames in sports history.
But Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson is so much more than that.
For starters, the pride of Chichester High is the Daily Times Football Player of the Millennium.
Of course, after starring at Chi High, Johnson went on to a sterling career at Widener, one that landed him in the College Football Hall of Fame.
He was a 15th round draft pick in 1974 and played 14 seasons in the NFL with the Houston Oilers, Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins. He was a special teams standout and two-time All-Pro.
He also is credited with being among the first to "celebrate" a score with his own special end zone dance.
Johnson was back in town Thursday night to be enshrined in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. It was a big night for Delco connections. Also honored were Chester native Danny Murtaugh, Archbishop Carroll and Notre Dame women's hoops coach Muffett McGraw, Villanova and Eagles great Brian Westbrook.
They could not find a more deserving group.
Simply put, they don't get better than Billy Johnson.
