An election dominated by a name that is not on the ballot

I had an inkling of what was going on when I designed today's front page.

Red State.

Blue State.

Delaware County today will vote for a governor, U.S. Senator, state senator and representatives in the state House. But it is a name that will not appear on the ballot that will dominate the day.

Many people believe today's midterm election will be a referendum on the first two years of President Donald Trump. Count political guru Terry Madonna of Franklin and Marshal College in that pack. We talked to him yesterday.

On the line will be control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Right now both are controlled by the GOP.

You want my take?

Dems take the House; Republicans keep control of the Senate.

Sorry, Beto-maniacs. I don't see the upstart Texas Dem upending incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, despite a wild campaign and a monstrous fund-raising push by O'Rourke.

Here in Delco? Here are my predictions.

Scanlon cruises to a big win in the 5th District U.S. House race.

Republican state Sen. Tom McGarrigle survives a strong challenge from Democrat Tim Kearney, mayor of Swarthmore.

Republican Mary Hopper beats Dave Delloso to fill the 162nd House seat being vacated by Rep. Nick Miccarelli.

The race to watch in the Pa. House field is the 168th, where Republican incumbent Rep. Chris Quinn has been beaten up by opponents of Sunoco's Mariner East 2 pipeline project, which has dominated the talk in Middletown and Edgmont now for months. He is being challenged by Rose Tree Media School Board member Kristin Seale, who the Republicans have painted as a socialist radical.

That one might be the closest race in the county.
