Saints preserve us? More like embalm us

The Saints wanted to make a statement in yesterday's game against the Super Bowl champions.

It's one they've been toting around since last February.

One of the Saints indicated that they would have had no problem beating the Birds during that magical playoff run last season.

If Sunday's game is any evidence, they might have a point.

The Saints had a giant chip on their shoulder, and they dumped it on the Eagles.

Sean Payton and New Orleans not only crushed the Eagles in a dominating 48-7 win, they decided to rub the Super Bowl champs' noses in it.

How bad was it? It set a record for the worst defeats suffered by a defending Super Bowl champion.

I guess we can put away all those T-shirts and hats we bought last February.

Yeah, it's gotten that bad.

The Eagles played like a team that was already thinking about the golf course and the off-season, not a team fighting to save its season just a few months after toting around the Lombardi Trophy.

The Eagles had one shot at beating the Saints. They needed a quick start, they needed to run the ball and keep Drew Brees and the electric Saints offense off the field.

They did none of those things, and looked pretty much disinterested in doing it.

In the meantime, the Saints were thoroughly enjoying sending their message to the Super Bowl champs.

How bad was it.

Malcolm Jenkins, one of the few Eagles who looked like he was at all interested, gave a special middle-finger salute to his old coach Payton after the Saints isolated him for a touchdown while they already were sitting on a lopsided lead.

It will take the Eagles a long time to get the taste of this dud out of their mouths.

But here's the weird thing. They remain just two games back of the Redskins and still have two dates with the Washington. The Redskins lost their starting quarterback for the season yesterday when Alex Smith suffered a broken leg.

But the Birds did fall a game behind the Cowboys, and are just one game ahead of the Giants, who visit the Linc this Sunday.

It might be time to pull the sheet up over this team.

Saints preserve us?

Yesterday the embalmed the dead-to-the-world Eagles.

Need something to cheer you up?

Hey, how about that Jimmy Butler!
