St. Nick to the rescue?

You knew this was going to be a strange Eagles season - after all, we've never been defending Super Bowl champions before.

But I don't think anyone was ready for the twists and turns this disappointing season has taken.

Well, buckle your seat belt. It just got weirder.

First yesterday morning Eagles coach Doug Pederson announced at his regular press briefing that Quarterback Carson Wentz would not be practicing because of some soreness in his back. The coach gave every indication this was not a big thing, and that they would continue to monitor the situation. He also stressed that it's apparently something that has been bothering Wentz for some time, no necessarily something he suffered in Sunday's depressing overtime loss to the Cowboys, in which again for the first three quarters Wentz did not play well before catching fire in the fourth quarter.

Then things got really weird. Reports started filtering out that Wentz would not play Sunday night vs. the Rams, and even that he might be on the shelf for the rest of the season.

So far the Eagles are not saying exactly what Wentz's status is. They have not yet ruled him out for Sunday's prime time matchup.

Bob Grotz has the details here.

But it does raise a slew of questions about just how healthy Wentz has been all season, one in which he missed the first two games of the season as he recovered from a knee injury he suffered - ironically enough - exactly one year ago in L.A. vs. the Rams.

It also sets up a scenario that is almost beyond belief, one that even Hollywood would probably say is too impossible.

It opens the door for a sequel by St. Nick.

Yes, Nick Foles.

Remember him? He's the guy who came in after Wentz went down last year, and rallied the 'underdog' Birds to a Super Bowl title, claiming a Super Bowl MVP crown along the way.

Can he do it again?

The odds are a bit longer this year, but if the Eagles can run the board - winning three straight - the odds actually are in their favor.

Of course, they must beat the Rams Sunday night. If they lose there, it might be all over.

But should the Vikings lose in the 1 o'clock game vs. the Dolphins, anything could then be possible.

The Eagles final two games are at home vs. the Texans and Redskins.

Weirder things have happened.

Last year, for instance.

How weird would it be for Nick Foles to pull an instant replay and somehow rally the Birds to the playoffs - again.

Foles II, the Sequel.

Anyone in the mood for another holiday blockbuster?
