10 years ago, a rarity on Delco Council

What a difference a decade makes.

One of my favorite parts of the newspaper is our daily Other Times piece on Page Two.

Today I am reminded of what was once a rarity in this county.

Not so much anymore.

A decade ago something happened in Delaware County Council that had not happened in more than a decade.

Council voted on a measure and it was not unanimous.

The occasion was a vote by council to approve $28 million in bonds as the county portion of the price tag to build a new soccer stadium on the Chester waterfront that would be the home of the region's Major League Soccer franchise, the Union.

County Councilman Andy Lewis had been adamant that he wanted the chance to look at the MLS books before he put county taxpayers on the hook for a big chunk of money. When the MLS bosses rebuffed his request, the Haverford pol voted against the bond measure.

It marked the first time in anyone's memory that council had voted on anything that had not resulted in a 5-0 vote. Actually, this wound up 2-1. Tom McGarrigle and Jack Whelan voted in favor, Linda Cartisano and Christine Fizzano Cannon recused themselves from the vote.

Fast forward 10 years.

Today not only are split votes routine, there are two Democrats sitting on County Council. Kevin Madden and Brian Zidek won both openings in the last council election, and now all eyes are turning to three seats that will be on the November ballot.
