Meeting tonight in Wallingford-Swarthmore on racial incident

A reminder that the new year brings with it some old problems.

The Wallingford-Swarthmore community will gather tonight to discuss the difficult fallout from an incident that occurred a few weeks ago.

The belief is that a couple of teens - apparently students at Strath Haven High School - distributed an image on social media of themselves wearing white hoods that looked markedly like Ku Klux Klan attire. At the same time they sent a letter to many households that fairly dripped of racial animus.

It did not take long for the incident to go viral in the community.

Students rallied against such hateful acts by staging a walk-out.

The image and letter was condemned by the school district, community leaders, local religious officals and the NAACP. The school district is cooperating with local police in investigating the incident.

Tonight's meeting is expected to include an update on that investigation, and other measures being taken to prevent any further instances and discuss the issue of race in the community.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the Strath Haven High School auditorium, 205 S. Providence Road in Wallingford.

Speakers will include representatives from Nether Providence Police Department, Media Area NAACP, Strath Haven High School and Wallingford-Swarthmore School District
